The Carolina Chickadee is a common year round breeding resident of Big Canoe. They are most commonly seen at feeders. Birders note them and tufted titmice in the trees by listening for their calls. During migration, they are often in mixed flocks with the migrants. The appearance of the sexes are the same. They are easy to spot with their black and white heads, gray backs and white under parts.

The Chickadee is named for its song that goes “Chickadee dee dee …. They and the Tufted titmouse also have squeaks that are commonly heard in the wooded areas.
